40% of the students in a college play basketball, 34% of the students play tennis and the number of students who play both the games is 234. The number of students who neither play basketball nor tennis is 52%. Determine the total number of students in the college.

Answer: (b)

Let the number of students be 100.

Then number of students who play both the games

= (34 + 40) – (48) = 26

If 26 students play both the games, then the total number of students = 100

Therefore, if 234 students play both the games, then the total number of students

= $100/26 × 234$ = 900

Question :15

If the numerator of certain fraction is increased by 200% and the denominator is increased by 150% the new fraction thus formed is $9/10$. What is the original fraction?

Answer: (b)

Let the numerator be x & denominator be y

$\text"x + 200 % of x"/\text"y + 150 % of y" = 9/10$

${x + 200/100 x}/{y + 150/100 y} = 9/10$

${3x}/{2.5y} - 9/10$

$x/y = {9 × 2.5}/{10 × 3} = 22.5/30 = 225/300 = 3/4$
